Subject: Re: [Futuregen] Cohort paper

Dear Stefan and Johan,

I'm also sending my comments in the document attached.

Four main points from my side:
i) I really like the paper/results and I find it very interesting. It's the kind of analysis that makes me want to know more. The geographical disaggregation is a great addition.
ii) As I mentioned in the zoom, maybe focus throughout on the sex/gender differences as the main focus and entry point to the analysis and use specific male/female trajectories to make sense of the sex/gender differences.
iii) Not sure I agree with all the proposed conclusions as for me there are some cohort changes also for men in N&WE (even if they appear only in the younger groups within each cohort). Is there any way to establish whether there is a cohort change analytically rather than using the eye "test alone"?
iv) I think the evolution of women in EE is particularly interesting as it contradicts a bit the usual mortality selection argument: men are no the ones catching up as their life expectancy improves, but women are becoming healthier in this region. Effects of access to education (which could explain - perhaps - why we don't see the same effect in SE, where women of these cohorts might still be faced with difficulties in access to education)? Looking at the countries that make up each cluster, N&W Europe - with lower sex/gender differences) are also all rich countries. Something about the general level of material development leveling country differences?

Thanks a lot again for this and happy to discuss further.

Best wishes,
Ricardo

Dear all,

It just struck me that I probably forgot to circulate the ‘cohort-mansucript’ with Susan’s comments. So, if you’ve already commented in another version – no need to comment in this as well, just send it as it is and I’ll fuse the comments.

All the best,

Stefan
