Hej Ricardo, hej everyone,
Great work with the clustering. I think it looks really good. Johan and I checked the cohort patterning of ADLs in the Netherlands and it is quite similar to what we observe in Sweden and Denmark – so it shouldn’t be a problem clustering them together (although we might consider calling it Northern Europe rather than Nordic Europe).
Discussing with Johan, we were also wondering why Poland is not included in any cluster.
One potential comment we could get (although I don’t know who would raise it) is why we use different classifications across papers and the data navigator – but I guess we could answer that straightforwardly (the clustering used in the ADL paper do not make sense for care).
Anyways, well done!
Have a lovely weekend,
Stefan

Ämne: [Futuregen] Data Navigator - possible region/country clusters
Dear colleagues,
As agreed in the last zoom, I would like to kick-start the discussion on the regional clusters to try for the Data Navigator. Below is my suggestion from a care perspective (other groupings could be relevant, especially for caregiving, but I think this one would be general enough in my opinion).
We could also have different groupings for different variables, but that might be too confusing, even if we would signal that in the website.
Looking forward to your views on this.
I also circulate some an individual country graphs with smooth lines (thank you to Eszter) - i.e. with lines that take into account the wider time gap between some waves of SHARE. This produces actually relatively smooth trends for wealth. Just as an additional input.
Best wishes,
Ricardo
Possible regional/welfare regime clusters for Data Navigator:
Eastern Europe: Czech Republic (if only till wave 6) OR Czech Republic, Slovenia and Estonia (if also using wave 7 - e.g. ADLs)
Southern Europe: Spain, Italy (if only till wave 6) OR Spain, Italy and Greece (if also wave 7 - there are some issues with the Greek data by income/wealth for the 1st wave)
Continental Europe: Austria, Germany, France, Belgium (if only till wave 6), OR Austria, Germany, France, Belgium and Switzerland (if also wave 7).
Nordic Europe: Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands (regardless of wave).
Continental Europe is the Smørrebrød or gulasch group here, but personally I could live with this from a care perspective. Similarly, the Netherlands would be a "Nordic country" based on its system characteristics - this may be a contentious country for the ADL and IADL. Switzerland is a bit of an odd-country out but it fits with the Continental group of sorts.
I considered only countries that were at least in 3 waves of SHARE.
