WP3 responses:

1) What is the purpose of your study?

Our aim is to identify and critique methods and measures used to study gender i.e. sex and social locations) and health

2) What are the major findings of your study?

Multiple designs have been used although most adjust for or do not really address gender. Those that do generally find gender differences in health outcomes regardless of the study design. We have only touch upon whether indicators, themselves, have different meanings for men and women and across social locations

3) Thinking about your study findings, what do you think might be important to knowledge users*? Why?

I think we could ask participants what they think certain subjective measures mean - i.e. try to determine whether e.g. self-rated health has different meanings for women and men (might women include mental health while men exclude it). Another example, when asked about function does self-assessment cary by sex (previous research suggests women underrate and men overrate their ability. Same for other social indicators like income sufficiency, quality of life, etc.

And a couple of other considerations:

In your view (in relation to your work) who are potential knowledge users? (older people/policy-makers/ any particular characteristics?)

Are there any research questions you want to propose that the qualitative study explore?

knowledge users are, primarily, the research community

As a reminder, here is our starting point for questions to ask of knowledge users:

1. What factors impact/ shape experiences of ageing (well?)?

-go through list of factors identified by the study groups (each WP findings) and with an example to help participant to reflect and respond

-ask what are the interviewee’s views on each factor? Why?

-is there anything missing? If yes, why?

2. What are your views on the impacts of the use of gendered tools (indicators) used to gather knowledge about later life?

-go through list of [gendered tools(indicators) ] that are currently used/identified in the groups (each WP).

-ask what are the interviewees’ views on each of the tools/indicators

*knowledge users – those who may use or who will be impacted by the work in some way

Please feel free to ask for additional clarification about the request for information about your work. The aim of collecting the information is to get an initial sense of what you each view as important and coming from your work that can be relayed to knowledge users for feedback.

We will use the responses to initiate further conversation about how to shape the qualitative study in a coherent manner.

I look forward to hearing back from all of you!

Best wishes,

Janet

Dear Stefan,

Thank you very much.
As I said in the other e-mail, it looks good! I have attached this to
the agenda in Freedcamp.
We have been in contact with Janet and there will be something coming
still on the qual study as well.
I think we have quite some interesting material for a discussion.

I know that we have 2h planned already, but would you all have the
possibility to extend another 15-20 mins if needed? I think we might
need the extra time to discuss all these first empirical results.
This would be very helpful.

Looking forward!

Best wishes,
Ricardo
